CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Mako
AGE: 22
CANON: Legend of Korra

CANON HISTORY: Voila!
CANON PERSONALITY:Mako considers himself older than his 22 years would imply. Since he was a a kid, he's been derisively referring to other kids as kids. So, really, he's 22 going on 35? But this wasn't without reason: he's been taking care of himself and his brother since he was eight, when a firebender killed his parents. It's only recently that he's been able to move past focusing on survival and start investigating what he likes... which is investigations. After all, he's a fast rising star in Republic City's police force.

Mako is serious, at least on the surface, compared to his brother's goofiness, and he prefers to be the one in charge of decisions for what their little family does. He doesn't really take most of Bolin's suggestions seriously, even when they might be helpful. Bolin has no problem wearing his heart and emotions on his sleeve, while Mako is much more guarded, and very rarely does he lose control of his emotions.

He's distant and cold to others when he first meets them because he really doesn't care much about how much of a first impression he makes. Sure, he can smile and wink for the camera when necessary, but that really isn't his default mode when making friends. In fact, Mako tends to focus on cold calculations most of the time. It's evident in his trademark 'cool under fire' fighting style, and he's mused aloud on which would be better, going for Korra versus Asami as a girlfriend. You know. Back before he burned both those romantic bridges and friendzoned himself because of his indecision.

His cold calculations ALSO tend to forget to factor his own feelings into the equation. Once he gets close to someone, he will defend them and go out of his way for them, to an almost menacing degree. He did this with Korra once he got to know her, and with Asami while defending her father from the accusations of being an Equalist. However, he acts completely clueless about the difference in his behavior towards Korra after the first time her life is seriously in danger when Asami presses him, instead of thinking about what she's saying. He prefers to put the conversation off for another day, because he's not the most in touch with his feelings.

But heaven help you if you mess with one of his people. The few times that he does lose his temper, are usually focused on either being confused about how love works, or because someone he cares about is threatened.

So, even though Mako considers himself the head of the household, he's still prone to ridiculousness himself. His entire introduction to Asami was him getting hit with a motorbike, and then forgetting to be completely mad at her while she sweet talked him into a date. He makes excuses for doing things he considers childish, and hides behind his role as a police officer to get out of certain things. And he's still prone to petty fighting, occasionally with Bolin, and definitely with Asami while they were on the rocks. But it's more readily apparent with Bolin, as they are brothers and know each other way too well. Oh, did I mention he gives bad love advice to his brother? And makes some of the greatest facial telegraphs at his brother? Quite in contrast from his serious persona.

He used to be very attached to his Dad's scarf, his last memento he had of his parents. After all, while he is cold and guarded, he still had to watch his parents be brutally murdered when he was only a kid, and did take on the full responsibility for taking care of his brother. His childhood is more than reasonably stunted. But along the way, he and his brother found his father's family in Ba Sing Se. He had grown up enough to know that his grandmother needed the memory more than he did.

Mako has also grown up, and after achieving stability in his own life and constantly being around Korra, he's learned to put the greater good ahead of his own survival. When he was a kid, he considered the people stupid enough to fall for his and Bolin's cons deserving of what they got. But as an adult, he realized if he didn't find a way to destabilize Kuvira's mech, he would lose his friends, potentially his family, and definitely the city that he loved. He used his lightning bending to cause the powering mechanism to blow up-- not planning on how he was going to get out of there and survive, which was a major change in how he'd grown up since befriending Korra.

And, as a final word, Mako has the capability to make absolutely terrible puns. "Looks like you had some car trouble" indeed. Of all the suave things to say.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:Mako is a firebender, and a talented pro-bender. His probending style is similar to that of a boxer's, he keeps his arms in close to his sides, fists defensive of his face, and focuses on short, concentrated jabs at his opponents. He also can firebend without explicitly making firebending motions, aka the breath of fire ability. He and has brother tag team an officer with their respective abilities once.

He is also able to lightning bend, as well as redirect lightning. He shows the capability while one of the mecha tanks is shocking him, and he redirects the shock towards the mecha, frying its systems and knocking out the Equalist inside of it.

Mako is also the only person to show the strength of mind to defeat Amon's bloodbending long enough to shock him. It's only temporary, and he gets caught again later, but his cool under fire style does have some other advantages.

Besides that, Mako is extremely flexible and athletic-- he shows now problem lifting his brother over his shoulder, though his brother is definitely larger than him. And he's definitely had to pull some crazy moves to dodge some of the attacks thrown at him in pro-bending.

ALSO, he's crazy good at driving a motorcycle, and really excels at solving mysteries and puzzles. This fast thinking is part of what made him a good detective, and a good body guard during his short stint...

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Mako Lou
AU AGE: 22
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: No scar on his right arm

AU HISTORY: Mako was part of a normal family in Recollé. He lived with his brother and his parents in a nice suburban area of the city. However, that changed when he and his parents went out to the theater, leaving his brother behind with the babysitter. After the show and on their way back to their car, they were held at gunpoint by a mugger. He killed Mako's parents and upended the life that he had known up to that point.

Because they had no living family in the country, Mako and his brother were immediately tossed into the foster care system, where they had to deal with standoffish families that weren't used to dealing with first generation immigrant children. Mako and his brother were used to speaking Chinese at home with their parents, but went to having to speak English all the time... except with themselves.

When Mako aged out of foster care, he took responsibility for his brother and focused on getting him to college. Something he... wasn't quite so successful at, himself. He considers it a point of accomplishment that his little brother is about to start his first semester at a college out of state. Mako had hoped to get a sports scholarship for college-- considering he was one of the best soccer players on his high school team, but aging out had meant giving up focusing on sports and college. He tried a few night classes, but they were only mildly successful.

During that time, Mako decided to go into the police force. In part, because the pay was above minimum wage, and in part because he felt it was the best use of his skills. He was getting bored doing customer service-- and he wasn't really a great fit for it. His personality could be too caustic... And he was bad at the necessary flirting for tips. Go figure.

That brings us to where we are today-- with Mako eying possibly exploring his creative side by writing jokes while he's waiting for people to drive past him speeding.

Sometimes the days on the police force are boring, okay. And Mako, in Recollé, had far more access to PTSD counseling than he did in canon.
AU PERSONALITY: Like in canon, Mako was angry at his parents deaths. But state mandated counseling at least gave him the barest of tools to deal with it—though how effective they were is up for debate. I wouldn’t say that he’s as stable as he is in canon. He doesn’t have an overall influence in his life for compassion and justice like he did in canon with Korra. In fact, his decision to go into the police, outside of economics, is partially driven by a desire to hopefully get answers for his parents. It’s a selfish motivation, instead of the start of a selfless way of viewing the world.

Indeed, Mako is still bitter due to the failures of the system. His family being off hands, with the exception of his brother, and forcing him to cut short his goals of getting a sports scholarship and going to college and hopefully permanently getting out of what he considers, to put it lightly, a really bad situation, has left him with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.

He tries to channel that towards humor where he can… And he’s sometimes willing to share those jokes with others, which is a little bit of a difference from canon. Mako’s only claim to fame was being a sports star, not trying to be a stand-up comedian. But, he does keep the workaholic side of him ready. In fact, it’s his constant commitment to his work that makes it harder for him to focus exclusively on going to school, which would get him to the detective force faster.

So, all in all, he’s at this weird, angry point in his life. He knows he should care about a greater good, but he can’t see what’s in it for him. He lacks the role models that would be able to help him see past that, and while he can at least cope with humor in a way he couldn’t in canon, he still is closer to his canon teenager self, than his post-canon self. This is not a man who would give his grandma his only memento of his father, for instance, even if he could find her.

Outside of trying to write comedy sketches, Mako likes to people watch. If he has time to grab a cup of coffee and walk along town, he’ll take the opportunity. He’s frugal with his style, so this is a rare occasion at best, but still. It helps him think, and gives him fuel for his stand-up routine.

His other favorite thing to do is work on boxing. He’s made friends with one of the owners of a gym he used to work at—so he still gets the employee discount. That’s the other place he can be found… especially since staying fit for the force is important. It’s been his only outlet since he left high school sports.
